What is ‘We call it Ballet’?
‘We call it Ballet’ puts a unique spin on the age-old art form, by adding twinkling LED lights to the dancers’ costumes to make the performance more accessible for all audiences. Through graceful and precise movements, changing lights and added narration, it’s a beautiful reinterpretation of one of Tchaikovsky’s most celebrated ballets.
Ballet, its storytelling and the show
Ballet is a highly technical art form that requires passion, discipline and experience. Due to these demanding physical requirements of the craft and their facial expressions, ballet dancers are often considered both athletes and performing actors because they need to convey a story using the universal language of movement. What’s more, when well-choreographed and cast, a ballet performance turns into an enchanting spectacle that can captivate any audience member.
For this reason, The Sleeping Beauty is one of the world’s most performed ballet productions because ballet dancers get to fully flex their muscles, literally and figuratively. They get to portray different characters, convey their emotions and tell the timeless tale of Princess Aurora, symbolizing the battle between good and evil. This season, this centuries-old ballet is receiving a glow-up thanks to ‘We call it Ballet’, where classical ballet meets innovation.
As ballerinas take to the stage in glittering costumes, prepare to be dazzled by a one-of-a-kind ballet production. So head to the Ann and David Hicks Auditorium at the Jacksonville Public Library to catch The Sleeping Beauty with a twist in the coming months. There are two back-to-back performances each evening, at 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm and doors open 30 minutes prior to every show.
